- Hello to everyone in GUS Land. I'm posting this message in hopes I can
- solve a little problem I seem to be having with 7th Guest. It seems as
- though the GUS (emulating the Sound Canvas) is playing the wrong
- instruments from time to time. Someone on a local BBS told me there is a
- fix for it. Can someone tell me what I need to do to fix this?

- I've asked this question a couple of times, but don't recall an answer that
- has solved my problem (plus, my daily digests were coming a little
- sporadically)
-
- ANyhow, whenever a game calls for a cymbal patch, you here the cymbal, then
- some static afterwards. Using patch manager, I've been able to limit it to a
- couple of patches.
-
- I thought maybe upping my card to 1 meg would help, so I just bought some
- today, memory works fine, but I stall have the cymbal static. ANy comments?

- Mike,
- Even if it works with the Mitsumi, the shareware version of CDgrab
- won't allow you to do the actual grab to disk. You need to register
- it and then get CDgrab pro, but it's a bit expensive (#45, that's
- about 70 USD..).
- About SCSI, the only one I know is CDDA, which only works with the
- Toshiba XM3401 drive (anybody tested it with the 4401??). I have tried
- it with a 3401 and it works great|

-
- The type of SCSI controller is not that critical, but your CD ROM reader
- has to support reading CD Audio discs in its firmware. The only freeware
- programs I know that will read CD Audio work with the Toshiba 3401 drive.
- I suspect this drive will be easy to get soon (if it isn't already) at
- a discount, since the new triple-speed drives will start becoming more
- of a market force.
-
- If you can get your hands on a Toshiba drive, let me know and I'll send
- you a copy of the program I wrote for it... :)

- GUS Mixer problem
-
- I have an early GUS and have great difficulties to get the MIXER
- function going. Here's the particulars:
-
- Installed gusmixer.drv in \WINDOWS\SYSTEM
- MIXER.EXE is present in \ULTRASND
- The 3.1 Windows drivers are installed in the right place
- I have been able to setup the Mixer applet in a window
- If I now double click on the applet, it does something and everything
- goes quiet again. In short, it does not start up.
- If I open the drivers window of the Windows configuration function,
- it immediately tells me that it cannot find the driver, although the
- text about the mixer is in the installed drivers window. I suppose
- that is due to Windows system.ini setup with the entry:
- mixer=ultramixer.drv
-
- Since I want to record from my CD-Rom and from my Roland E86
- connected to line-in, I need some means of mixing.
-
- Anybody with clever thoughts?

- >Phat.
-
- Well I guess I didn't give enough info. Here are the 3 ways I've installed
- it so far with the same results:
-
- 1. installed gus0041.zip over old installation
- 2. deleted ultrasnd.ini and all your SBOS files (loadsbos.*, and installed
- over remaining installation.
- 3. made backup of all gus files, removed everything (software, autoexec.bat)
- from system, install gus0041.zip, copy back pat files.
-
- RAM tests out great! Several times!
-
- I'm just running the 1Meg midi demo bat that comes with the installation
- the Techo song before it plays great, but then it doesn't have any BASS in
- it either.
-
- Distortion at low freq would probably be a better description of my problem.
- I suppose its a matter of using a different pat file? Do I need a better
- sterio?

-
- I'm rather puzzled by this one. I got a demo of this game from
- the cover of PC Format and was rather excited to see that, as it
- was unzipping, alongside ROLAND.CAT, ADLIB.CAT etc. there was
- a GRAVIS.CAT. So, I ran the demo, selected Ultrasound and things
- worked fine. The game had a MOD-style soundtrack and had stereo
- sound effects.
-
- BUT the other day, whilst browsing through HMV I looked on the back
- of a UFO: Enemy Unknown box and the Ultrasound wasn't listed as
- being supported. Anyone know whether it is or isn't? I thought
- that perhaps, at last, Microprose were going to give the GUS the
- native support it deserves....

-
- Just thought I would say goodbye and thanks to Gravis...
-
- The past 1 1/2 yr or so has been fun. I love the Ultrasnd, but frankly the
- TSR's suck.
-
- Your partners in crime, Logitech, have released a card that is definately a
- worthy Ultrasnd replacement, the SoundWave 32.
-
- I highly recommend this card to anyone, it has the OPL/4, SoundBlaster Pro,
- Chip set built on the board. This, of course, relieves the need for TSR
- compatability for Digi Speech. It also uses WaveTable Syn, therefore, General
- Midi is available for all applications.
-
- ULTIMA 8, X-Wing, DOOM, and every other game I've tired sounds and runs great.
- Most games even run smoother, I would assume this is due to hardware sound
- support, instead of software. The General Midi is also built on the board.
- The card comes with NO TSRs, just a SMALL .SYS file to 'reset' the card. My
- base memory is over 637k (even with CD-ROM extensions)
-
- In short, the SoundWave is everything the Ultrasnd should be.
-
- I must say thank you to Gravis though, your hard work was the only reason I
- kept the card this long. Jayseen, Brad and the rest of the team did a great
- job with software compatability.

- Also .nst (noisetracker) .stm (screamtracker 2) .far (farandole)
- ult (ultratracker)
- I found some info on the various file formats on
- wasp.eng.ufl.edu
- Don't remember exact directory, but take a look around.
- I am busy writing a trakker for composing my own files, I was planning
- on including S3M support, but the format seems too geared towards the
- SB (it allows FM instruments). Bummer. I think the .ULT format is
- probably the best one to go for. I will also include support for
- the various .MOD formats (protracker,fasttracker 6 & 8). Does anyone
- know what the mod signature (M.K. in protracker, 6CHN in 6 channel
- fasttracker etc..) should be for a 12 or 16 channel .MOD ????
- How about 12CH and 16CH ?
- Thanks for any comments.
